The Budget-Layer software comes with a module section to add plans, expenses and containers, an expense section to add expenses and attached them to an expense module, a user section to manage users with a profile, a container section to add containers along with tags to enable filtering on the plan list, a configuration section to manage the database credentials, admin email and editor settings, and a plugin section to upload new extended functionalities or view the plan plugin result page.

Both the modules and the expense items can have their data shown or hidden on the plan list. They have a date and time that is customizable with a calendar popup and a content editor to write HTML descriptions. They can also both be published, unpublished and reordered. The plan module date and time is the one used as the start point in the plan plugin list.

Both the expense module and expense items have a cost field along with a schedule that is used to calculate on a 365 days period the final budget in the plan list. The plan module works independently to add the gains that are concactenated between all plan modules following their schedule. All of the expenses are then substracted from the total of gains to get the total and a list is rendered on a daily view that increment in a profit column each day with the additional gain minus expenses.

The user section is used to collect username within the expenses items and modules. Any users can make changes to the entire admin area and is allowed to create of modify additional users within the software. The plan list can either show or hide username for each configured module or expense items.

The configuration section allows user to set a rich-text editor for the description, to place the site into maintenance and remove the plan list option in the plugin dropdown, to set the admin email for any notifications received within the dashboard, to update the site title and finally manage the database credentials. All users can access the configuration section.

The containers section is mostly used to create tags that are used to filter the expense or plan modules and expense article into categories for the plugins plan page. Additional tags can be added to a newly created or existing container module and get set in the other existing modules or expenses. When a new tag is added an alias is generated for it. Any duplicated alias will be replaced by an encoded string. Tags may also be unchecked from within their container and exchanged between containers.

The plugin section is used for adding any new extended functionalities to the software. Additional plugins may be download from here and uploaded within the dashboard plugin area. Any admin can access the plugin section and unpublish a plugin from the list. Deleting a plugin may erase the content from the database and the plugin files as well. The plugins are usually ZIP archives that are extracted to the appropriate directories once uploaded in the files.
